      Casper Custom is a modified version of Casper, Ghost's default theme, with a manual light/dark mode toggle added to the navigation. This documentation walks you through everything you need to install, configure, and start publishing.

      Getting Started

      Install the Theme

      1. Go to Settings → Design in Ghost Admin.
      2. Click Change theme → Upload a theme.
      3. Select `casper-custom.zip` and upload it.
      4. Click Activate.

      Requires Ghost 5.0.0 or higher.

      Navigation is managed under Settings → Navigation in Ghost Admin. There are two separate lists: Primary (shown in your header) and Secondary (shown in your footer).

      Just fill in a Label and a URL for each item — no special prefixes or formatting needed. This theme uses plain, flat menus (no dropdown sub-menus).

      Dark Mode

      This is the main thing that sets this theme apart from stock Casper — a moon/sun button in the header that lets visitors switch between light and dark mode themselves.

      How it works:

      • The Color Scheme theme setting (see below) decides what visitors see the first time they land on your site: Light, Dark, or Auto (matches their device/browser setting).
      • Once a visitor clicks the moon/sun toggle in the header, their choice is saved in their browser (`localStorage`) and remembered on their next visit — even if it's different from your default setting.
      • This only affects that visitor's browser. It doesn't change anything for other visitors or your default setting.
      💡
      If you want every new visitor to land on dark mode by default, set Color Scheme to `Dark`. They can still switch back to light using the toggle.

      Theme Settings

      All found under Settings → Design → Theme.

      Site wide

      1. Navigation layout. Options are Logo on cover, Logo in the middle, or Stacked. Controls where your logo and menu sit in the header.
      2. Title font. Options are Modern sans serif or Elegant serif. Font used for headings.
      3. Body font. Options are Modern sans serif or Elegant serif. Font used for paragraph text. Default is Elegant serif.
      4. Color Scheme. Options are Light, Dark, or Auto. The default appearance for new visitors. See Dark Mode above.

      Homepage

      1. Show publication cover - Toggle. Shows or hides the large cover area at the top of your homepage.
      2. Header style - Options are Center aligned, Left aligned, or Hidden. Controls how your homepage title and description are positioned.
      3. Feed layout - Options are Classic, Grid, or List. Changes how your post feed is arranged. Classic shows the first post large with the next two featured. Grid shows all posts in a uniform grid. List shows a denser list style feed with larger cards.

      Post

      1. Post image style — `Wide` / `Full` / `Small` / `Hidden`. Controls how the featured image appears at the top of a post.
      2. Email signup text — text. Heading shown above the email signup box at the end of a post. Leave empty to hide it.
      3. Show recent posts footer — toggle. Shows a "Recent posts" section at the end of each post.

      Members

      If memberships are enabled (Settings → Membership), Sign in and Subscribe appear automatically in the header — and switch to Account once a visitor logs in. No extra setup needed.

      FAQ

      The dark mode toggle isn't showing up

      Make sure you're looking in the header — it's the moon/sun icon button next to the search icon (or members buttons, if enabled).

      I set Color Scheme to Dark, but a visitor still sees light mode

      That visitor likely toggled to light mode themselves on a previous visit — their browser remembers that choice and it overrides your default for them specifically.

      Can I remove the dark mode toggle entirely?

      Yes, but it requires editing the theme code directly — remove the `.gh-darkmode` button block from `default.hbs` and the related script. Let us know if you'd like guidance on this.

      Can I change the accent color?

      Yes — Settings → Design → Brand → Accent color.

      Updates

      Light & Dark Button on Navigation

      A Light/Dark Mode toggle has been added beside the search icon in the header, allowing visitors to switch between light and dark themes instantly for a more personalized browsing experience.

      Remove label "Powered by Ghost"

      The "Powered by Ghost" badge has been removed, giving the membership popup a cleaner and more professional appearance.
